Forestville sits on the southern edge of the Forest, with Garigal National Park and the gullies running down to Bantry Bay and Middle Harbour Creek along its western and southern sides. The streets closest to that boundary have the roofing conditions of a bush block; the ones nearer Warringah Road behave like an ordinary post-war suburb.

The bush-edge streets

Heavy canopy means three things happen at once. Leaf and seed fill valleys and gutters, shaded roof planes stay damp and grow moss and lichen, and any lot mapped as bushfire-prone attracts the AS 3959 construction requirements for roof coverings, sarking and ember detailing.

The damp-shade problem is specific enough to be worth naming. A south-facing tile plane under canopy never properly dries, so lichen takes hold, the surface coating breaks down faster, and the tiles hold moisture. That accelerates everything else and is a reason restoration on these streets usually includes serious cleaning before anything is coated.

The flatter streets

Post-war brick-and-tile and some fibro, with the standard sequence of faults: bedding dried out under ridge and hip caps, pointing cracked and gone, a scatter of cracked tiles from decades of foot traffic and falling limbs, and often no sarking underneath.

Access on the sloping blocks

Forestville has plenty of blocks that fall away sharply at the rear toward the gullies. A roof that is single-storey at the street can be a long way off the ground at the back, which means edge protection, harness work and a slower, safer job. We will tell you if a site needs that before quoting, because it affects the price and we would rather you knew why.
