Newport is narrow enough that you can cross from the surf to Pittwater in a few minutes, and that is the practical fact behind every roofing decision here. One suburb, two exposures, and houses on both.
The ocean side
The beach, the streets behind it and the climb toward Bungan Head take the full onshore load. Salt lands on everything, and the roof fails where the metal is thinnest and the salt concentrates: screw heads, cut sheet ends, flashing laps and the inside of gutters. Wind-driven rain adds the second problem, pushing water uphill into laps that would stay dry on a sheltered roof.

The Pittwater side
Across the ridge, the blocks fall away toward the water through heavier tree cover. Marine air, but sheltered. The problems shift toward leaf in valleys and gutters, moss on shaded tile planes, corrosion starting inside gutters rather than outside, and access, because these are steep sites.
